Celebrating Louis Bridges – Chief Scout’s Commendation for Meritorious Conduct

Hampshire Explorer Scout Louis Bridges has been awarded the Chief Scout’s Commendation for Meritorious Conduct in recognition of his exceptional courage, leadership, and calm action during a serious road traffic incident on 25 March.

As he was leaving athletics training at Fleet and Crookham Athletics Club, Louis witnessed a car leave the road, crash through an 8‑foot brick wall, and come to rest in a nearby garden. With smoke rising from the vehicle and debris scattered across the scene, Louis immediately ran to help—without knowing whether the situation was safe.

He was the first person to reach the car. Thinking clearly under pressure, Louis called out to nearby residents to contact emergency services while he assessed the occupants. The driver was partially trapped by fallen masonry, and he led the effort to move the obstruction so he could reach her. He opened the car doors to clear the smoke, checked her responsiveness, and spoke calmly to help her control her breathing and stay conscious.

When well‑meaning adults attempted to remove the driver from the vehicle, Louis intervened—explaining that moving her could worsen potential injuries. He ensured a young child in the car remained safe and arranged for an adult to stay with them until help arrived.

Louis remained in control of the scene until emergency services took over.

A dedicated member of Scouting since 2015, Louis joined Chieftain Explorers in 2022 and serves as a Young Leader with the 29th Odiham Squirrels. He is also a committed participant in HYPER, the Hampshire Young People Emergency Response group, where he is known for his enthusiasm, reliability, and teamwork. The skills he used that day—First Response training, HYPER experience, and the confidence to lead—were all developed through his Scouting journey.

His athletics coach, who witnessed the event, said:

“Louis’s response was significantly beyond his years. Had I not known him and arrived as a bystander, I would have genuinely believed he was a trained professional.”

Louis’s quick thinking, bravery, and refusal to hesitate in the face of danger ensured the driver and child received immediate, appropriate care—and may have prevented further injury. His actions embody the very best of Scouting’s values.

A truly deserving recipient of the Chief Scout’s Commendation for Meritorious Conduct.
